In 1955, a sportswear icon was born in the most unusual of places. Having drunk a bit of whiskey when his flight was delayed, Abbot Pederson bought himself an unlikely drinking companion for his flight home: a stuffed penguin, which he named Pete.
At some point during the flight, and after a couple of cocktails, he accidentally hit Pete the Penguin's head. A stewardess on board the flight wrapped a scarf around the penguin's neck and joked: "It would look great on a shirt." This is what led Abbot Pederson to embroider this character on his new shirts. An icon is born.
Since then, Pete the Penguin has left his mark on a whole host of legends, from Frank to Bing and from Clint to Arnie. Original Penguin has found favor with big names in culture and sport, eager to position themselves as American classics, also good at having fun.
